International Conference

“Internationalization of Higher Education beyond English?”

November 9&10, 2019

“Internationalization of Higher Education beyond English?” is one of the activities within the event celebrating the 15th anniversary of the agreement for the establishment of PUF – Pôle Universitaire Français at Hanoi, a member of International Francophone Institute (2004-2019). At the same time, this conference is also an event in the series of seminars DAAS (Diderot Advanced Academic Seminars) organized by the International Francophone Institute. The conference was co-organized by IFI in collaboration with domestic and foreign partners: International and Comparative Education Research Group (ICE), Universiti Brunei Darussalam; Hạ Long University and the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Literature in Aix-Marseille (CIELAM).

The international conferrence with the topic “Internationalization of Higher Education beyond English?” will be held on November, 09 at VNU, 144 Xuân Thủy, Hà Nội and November, 10 at Hạ Long University, Uông Bí, Hạ Long.

Internationalization is becoming more important in higher education and is becoming synonymous with the widespread use of the English language. English has become the dominant teaching language and is used in science publications and other academic activities. In some developing countries, the language is compulsory for teaching and enrolment.

This widespread use of the English language as a lingua franca in academic and communication has many advantages, but also creates problems, such as the erosion of cultural diversity and making access to higher education unfair. It creates “Academic colonialism” and creates disadvantages within the education systems of non-English speaking countries.

More than 300 speakers and scientists from universities of Brunei, France, Korea, USA, UK ... and Vietnam will attend this conference. Scientists will participate in discussions to identify problems, share experiences and propose solutions to promote a sustainable and multilingual international cooperation model on education that contributes to the maintenance of cultural diversity in the world.
